Benzene-induced myelodysplastic syndrome.

In various industries benzene is used for cleaning, stain removal, and dilution and as an adhesive. The petrochemical industry uses benzene as a raw material for styrene, alkyl benzene, and caprolactam. Moreover, aromatic compounds are added to gasoline as a substitute for alkyl lead compounds. Although atmospheric lead pollution is reduced, the concentration of benzene released into the air is...

Deferasirox-induced urticarial vasculitis in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome*

Deferasirox is an iron chelator agent used in the treatment of diseases with iron overload, such as thalassemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. Although the majority of adverse reactions of deferasirox involve gastrointestinal symptoms and increase in serum creatinine and transaminases, skin rashes, such as maculopapular and urticarial eruptions, have also been reported. This study reports a case...

Myelodysplastic Syndrome

The hallmark of neoplastic disease, including myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), is clonal proliferation of cells. Clonal proliferation is the consequence of acquired somatic mutation that confers a proliferative advantage to cells. For the myelodysplastic syndrome, the ability to identify clonally derived cells has provided valuable information about the molecular pathogenesis of the disease, the...

Erythropoietin-induced deep vein thrombosis in myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report a rare case of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) secondary to erythropoietin (EPO) in an 89-year-old patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The incidence of EPO-induced thrombotic episode increases with an absolute increase of hemoglobin (Hb) beyond >12 gm/dL or rate of increase of Hb level >1 gm/dL every 2 weeks.
